James Cook Artist – Typewriter Exhibition
Every Friday, Saturday & Sunday from July 15th to August 7th 11am-4pm
Up until May 2022 James had mostly typed London-based and Essex countryside subjects as a result of residing and working in these areas. This new series of ‘World Landmarks’ for his Summer 2022 exhibition broadens the horizon and possibilities of the typewriter medium. Many of his latest drawings are based on old family photographs or fond memories of a particular holiday. At The Moot Hall you will be able to see his largest work to date alongside a display of typewriters.
The exhibition will feature James’ largest artwork to date which was only completed recently; a 2-meter drawing of the London skyline containing more than half a million typewritten marks and a project that is currently seeking to be certified by Guinness World Records for being the largest type written artwork ever created. The exhibition will also feature the artist’s signed Tom Hanks artwork which was celebrated in many news stories earlier this year. James will be on site to answer any questions and will be selling limited edition signed prints of all his work to date. James has a slogan he uses for his work “a picture is worth a thousand words” because each drawing not only is a random assortment of letters, numbers, and punctuation marks puzzle-pieced together, but there are also hidden messages for the viewer to find when looking at the drawing up-close. His largest panoramic drawing to date could take a good 20-30 minutes for the visitor to fully appreciate the scale and content of the work.

This years theme is ‘Astounding Inventions’ so we are focusing on inoculation, as Maldon made history in 1764 when Daniel Sutton inoculated 487 people against smallpox in just one day!
Come and see our temporary exhibition on Sutton’s work and how inoculation was developed and used to tackle smallpox in Britain.
