September at the MOOT HALL – time to make your corn dolly to ensure a good crop next spring!

In Robert D’Arcy’s day September was the time when his servants would male corn dollies. It’s doubtful that a man of Sir Robert’s education and standing in the community would have subscribed to such a ritual but we will never know, what we do know is that such ancient practices are deeply imbedded in our culture.

The MOOT HALL has had a busy summer with weddings and more tours at new times and continued to serve as a hub for events that take place every year like the recent carnival. Each year the ‘Friends’ are able to make improvements to the visitor experience at no cost to the public purse and we can do this with sincere thanks to the support and donations we receive from people who care, as we do, to make this historic structure accessible to Maldonians and Visitors alike.

We are open for tours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in September with tours at 11.00am and 12.30pm or other times by arrangement We are also looking forward to our free D’Arcy Day talk on The Theory and Practice of Judicial Torture in the Early Modern Period at 7.00pm on 7th September and Heritage Open weekend with free access from 10.00am to 4.00pm on both days.
